After 11 years of hostilities and persistent economic crisis, people in Syria are now faced with another emergency resulting from a series of earthquakes that hit Türkiye and northern Syria on 6 February 2023. As of early April, more than 5,900 deaths and more than 12,800 injuries have been reported in Syria, according to the Health Sector and the Ministry of Health. Many families lost their main breadwinner due to death or injury, while the economic situation in the country was already dire for millions of people unable to meet their basic needs. The earthquake has uprooted hundreds of thousands of families. Prior to the earthquake, 15.3 million people were found to need humanitarian assistance across all Syria, of whom 4.1 million were living under extreme or catastrophic conditions, according to the Joint Intersectoral Analysis Framework (JIAF) severity scale.

Almost four months after the earthquake, over 66,200 households remain in displacement, in and out of shelters. Despite difficulties in adequately tracking population movements following the earthquake, the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) cluster in HLG response areas estimates that most displacements originated from Salqin and Harim sub-districts in Idleb Governorate and Jandairis in Aleppo Governorate. Many of the displaced families reported fears of returning home, even when damage to their homes were cleared. Others moved out of shelters and in with relatives, sometimes in other areas of the country, while others who were already internally displaced, are returning to their areas of origin, where their houses are equally destroyed from the years of hostilities.
